Beng Hwee Tan is a global educator and dance professional with over a decade of experience fostering connections through movement and arts across diverse cultural landscapes. Educated at Soka University of America and Soka University in Japan, Beng has cultivated a profound commitment to humanistic education, inclusivity, and global citizenship, which form the foundation of his work.
With a background that spans continents and combines dance and education, Beng has pioneered Dance & Soka Education initiatives, using dance workshops within English language classes to promote mutual support, character development, and community building. He has also designed and led curriculum that integrates Hip Hop dance into language learning, as seen in his work at universities and dance schools in Japan. This work is based on a dedication to shaping global citizens through the arts, utilizing dance as a medium for self-development, cross-cultural dialogue, and social impact.
Beyond teaching, Beng has engaged in the dance industry in various countries, gaining expertise in Breaking and Hip Hop freestyle, training with dancers in Singapore, the United States, and Japan. He views dance not just as a performance or competition but as a powerful tool for social change, health, and community support. Beng’srecent work includes creating English- language university courses centered on Hip Hop’s cultural and historical significance, emphasizing themes of resistance, self-expression, and the global influence of Hip Hop.
